Harry Bertoia Diamond Chair by Knoll

A true icon of mid-century modern design, the Bertoia Diamond Chair is an elegant study in form, function, and innovation. Designed in 1952 by sculptor and designer Harry Bertoia, this chair reimagines industrial wire mesh into a piece of functional art. The chair’s delicate, lattice-like structure gives it a light, airy presence, while its durable steel frame offers strength and support.

Produced by Knoll, the Diamond Chair is meticulously crafted using welded steel rods, available in a variety of finishes including polished chrome, white, or black. A choice of seat pads or fully upholstered covers in an array of KnollTextiles elevates comfort without compromising the chair’s sculptural silhouette. Whether used as a statement lounge chair or paired in a modern living space, the Bertoia Diamond Chair reflects the designer’s belief that “the space in the chair is more important than the metal itself.”

About the designer

Harry Bertoia (1915–1978) was an Italian-American artist and designer renowned for his contributions to mid-century modern design. Born in Italy and educated at Cranbrook Academy of Art, Bertoia formed key collaborations with designers like Charles and Ray Eames and Eero Saarinen. His work with the Eameses in the 1940s on molded plywood furniture was a significant early milestone. In addition to furniture, Bertoia was an influential sculptor, known for his Sonambient sculptures that explored sound and metal forms. In 1950, Bertoia joined Knoll Associates, where he designed the iconic Diamond chair and other pieces for the Bertoia Collection, which seamlessly combined art and functional design. His pieces are celebrated worldwide, including in collections such as The Museum of Modern Art in New York. His legacy lives on through the Harry Bertoia Foundation, which preserves his extensive body of work.

Timeless, expressive, and unmistakably modern, this chair remains a cult piece in any interior.
