Bruce Tippett

Bruce Tippett (1933–2017) was a British artist and designer active between Europe and the United States, known for his research in the field of lyrical abstraction and mixed media techniques. Trained at the Slade School of Art in London, he initially developed an interest in landscape and light, before turning toward abstract painting from the late 1950s onward. His artistic language is influenced by Japanese calligraphy and experimental cinema, elements that helped define a style based on the balance between spontaneous gesture and compositional rigor. Over the course of his career he worked between London, Paris, Rome and New York, developing a coherent and minimal body of work. Some of his projects were translated into design objects produced by the Italian company Gavina, extending his work beyond the artistic field. His research is distinguished by formal essentiality and attention to the structure of the sign.
