A rare and striking sculptural coat rack designed by Bruce Tippett for Gavina in the 1960s, later part of the Knoll portfolio following Gavina’s acquisition.
This dynamic piece exemplifies the avant-garde design ethos of post-war Italy, where function seamlessly merged with bold sculptural form. Constructed from modular black lacquered components, the vertical spine is flanked by an array of gently curved arms that radiate in a rhythmic, tree-like formation. Its tiered branches offer ample space for coats, hats, and accessories while doubling as an abstract art piece — equally at home in a high-concept entryway or a minimalist interior. Tippett’s background in sculptural design is evident throughout the piece, showcasing a masterful blend of industrial materiality and organic gesture. A seldom-seen object and a collector’s gem, this coat rack is not only a functional furnishing but a conversation-starting statement of mid-century design history.
