About the designer
Mario Bellini (b. 1935) is a celebrated master of 20th-century Italian design, known for his ability to unite sculptural form with technical innovation. Trained as an architect in Milan, Bellini gained recognition in the 1960s and ’70s for his work across furniture, industrial design, and architecture. His early Amanta armchairs for B&B Italia introduced a new modular language to seating, combining comfort with a striking visual presence. Bellini went on to create iconic pieces such as the Camaleonda sofa and Le Bambole series, now considered benchmarks of modern design.
He has designed for leading brands including Cassina, Olivetti, Kartell, and Vitra, earning eight Compasso d’Oro awards. His work is held in the permanent collection of the Museum of Modern Art in New York, which honored him with a full retrospective in 1987.
